WHAT IS NEW:

Many of us have a major sweet tooth—a love for sugar and sweets so powerful it’s a craving, like a drug addiction. Sugar Detox Me offers a sugar detox diet; a way to break the cravings and addiction to sugar in our diets.

WHAT IS AUTHENTIC:

Oakes delves into the many facets of sugar addiction; not only our body’s cravings, but our minds. She explains why many of us “medicate” with sugar and gives tips for breaking those habits. Especially helpful is explaining all the “hidden” sugars—disguised by many different names—lurking in many everyday foods.

WHAT IS KIND:

Oakes includes several appendices in her book. Appendix A is “The Wheel of Life Exercise”, which helps the reader determine how close (or far) they are to living a well-balanced life. Appendix B is a scorecard to find out where the reader ranks on the Yale Food Addiction Scale, a very helpful tool indeed.

WHAT IS ENLIGHTENED:

Sugar Detox Me is a beautiful book, well-laid out with sumptuous photography and illustrations.  Recipes are labeled at the top as to “vegan”, “vegetarian”, etc. Interestingly, those recipes containing meat and/or eggs are labeled “non-vegetarian”.

IS THIS BOOK FOR YOU?

Probably not. Although we agree wholeheartedly that we need to drastically reduce the amount of refined sugar in the average American diet, too many recipes in Sugar Detox Me contain meat, fish, eggs, and oils, which is undeniably the opposite of the Naked Food way of eating, and is neither healthful or sustainable for the long term.
